Every day life has it's particular challenges and being a parent does not make these challenges any easier. However, how many times do you lose your cool with your child because of their behaviour, academic performance, or choices? What do you do? Parents often see their child as a reflection of themselves and when their child fails or makes a mistake it is perceived as the parent making this mistake which could then lead to a negative emotional response. Anger is a normal emotional response however one must be cautious of how they interact with and speak to their children in anger. Disciplining your child while 'seeing red' can have long term affects on your child's self esteem, emotional stability and future social interactions. Be aware of your anger triggers not only associated with your child and take the time to calm down before addressing a situation with your child. Deep breathing, counting to 10 or leaving the room can be helpful strategies to use when angry. Many parents lose control because they take children's misbehavior personally.
